The Irony of Choice [Pt-1]

“Politics is the gentle art of getting votes from the poor and campaign funds from the rich by promising to protect each from the other.” Oscar Ameringer (1870-1943).

Defined by the Oxford English Dictionary as “the capacity or ability to direct or influence the behaviour of others or the course of events”, power is arguably man’s greatest ambition in life. To succeed, one must first obtain real power. Real power gives one an ability to influence others in particular ways. Having power can be equated to having one’s hand on the steering wheel of any vehicle; once you are in charge of the machine, you are in pole position to decide which direction it moves.

Power means different things to different people – for politicians, power means getting elected to the local or national assembly; becoming a Minister or chairing a committee of Parliament; or becoming President. For civil servants, power is a job as Director General of a service or department; and for military personnel power means being at the helm of affairs of any of the prestigious commands.
